They can rent a dive boat, secure a dive buddy, and explore the underwater world at their own pace. While this appeals to some, there are significant drawbacks. Firstly, the cost for safety preparations and manpower can be prohibitive. Secondly, the heightened risk demands precise execution of plans. Lastly, this approach isn’t accessible to all divers, especially beginners; it’s a pursuit reserved for the daring and experienced. Despite the appeal, the price of autonomy in diving often extends beyond financial considerations, requiring a balance between freedom and safety.
However, in the Philippines, we have a unique approach to catering to divers. Recognizing that many travelers seek to alleviate the burdens of dive preparations, planning, and precise safety execution, we have developed a system of providing divers with dedicated dive guides or divemasters. More and more, Philippine diving is developing. Previously, travelers could only enjoy diving in land-based resorts, limiting them to one location and if they wished to explore new dive sites, they had to endure long travels to different islands. Nowadays, more liveaboards have opened up to cater to divers’ exploration needs, taking them too many islands to enjoy and discover diverse dive sites over several days in a luxurious and comfortable manner. This eliminates the need for exhausting transfers from one place to another.
And with that being said, liveaboard operators excel, especially when they have a great and dedicated diving team—the dive guides and their diving cruise directors. These individuals are the unsung heroes of the diving industry, the heartbeat of Liveaboard diving, making the most significant impact on the trip as they cater to the diverse needs of the guests. They are also role models, akin to guardians of the ocean, inspiring guests to respect and love the ocean more deeply and entice them to be more aware and passionate about diving.
At Infiniti Liveaboard, we feel incredibly blessed to have Dive Masters (DM) who are not only dedicated to diving but also demonstrate their love for their work onboard and unwavering respect for one another. They leave their respective families on land to join trips for a straight 10 months, serving and passionately guiding our guests with happiness and satisfaction. They endure the long wait to see their loved ones on land, showcasing their commitment to their profession and the joy they find in enriching the diving experience for our guests.
One incredibly touching event that exemplifies the dedication of our DMs onboard occurred when one of them posted a beautiful photo of a nudibranch on Facebook. Knowing that he is the sole diver in the family and the primary breadwinner, his mom inquired about the photo, expressing her admiration for its beauty and vibrant colors unlike anything she had seen before. Lovingly, our DM took the time to explain to his mom about the nudibranch, and it was evident that she was immensely proud of him for pursuing his passion. This heartfelt incident underscores the commitment and passion our DM bring to his role. Another DM has even influenced the way her father fishes for food. Before, he would catch any types of fish that went into his cage. However, upon learning that his daughter had become a Dive Master, he ceased fishing and shifted his focus to educating his fisherman friends about the diverse marine life that divers love to see in the ocean. He highlighted the beauty of these creatures underwater. Moreover, he supported and participated in the protection of a marine sanctuary in their bay. Our DMs have not only impacted the lives of our guests but also the lives of their own families. Through their pride and support, family members are inspired to follow the respectful ways of a Dive Master toward the ocean.
